Update : I have finally managed to get all the MechWarrior 4 games running smooth and reliably again using dgvoodoo2, I am currently fine tuning the setting to improve the in game visuals and as soon as I have a finished product I will rewrite this tutorial to reflect my findings.

It's busy for me as it is getting into the holiday season so it might take a few weeks for me to finish the rewrite. Check back soon.Update : One of the guys in the MechWarrior 4 Discord just linked me to a video that pointed out a crucial element that was preventing me and my fellow MechWarrior modders from getting this game to run, the windows update in October that killed the game was blocking setup files from populating new data.

Now that we know this we can make a simple workaround and get the ball rolling on this install tutorial.Big thanks to YouTuber Ostego Lectric for finding this fix.Update :I have been communicating with other game modders and have been experimenting in conjunction with them on how to get around some of the issues in Windows 10 that is preventing these games from running in a stable and playable manner. I am going to attempt to use a glide wrapper like DXwnd, mechvm, dosbox, or dgVoodoo2, witch should make it possible to trick new graphics cards to communicate with the older direct x and open gl data that these games use. As you guys already know Microsoft has a bad habit of screwing something up every time they launch and update to windows 10, I am going to employ a few methods to work around windows 10 limitations and get these games to launch and run reliably. I am still working on these solutions in my spare time but I am nearly done and I will update this tutorial with the new install methods when they are ready. Stay tuned Mechwarriors.P.S.: Big shoutout to HattedSandwich and CaptainWabbit for the info that got me started on this fix and to the guys in the Mechwarrior Discord Channel for all their help. This tutorial would have been dead a long time ago if it wasn't for you guys.

Thanks Everyone!Update : I updated the 'Playing With Game Controllers' section of this Tutorial. I added several options to map controllers and made sure to include plenty of links on where to buy the HOTAS controllers and for tutorials on how to use the mapping software. The old controller mapping software 'Pinnacle Game Profiler' is dead and no longer in development. It has been replaced by the Padstarr Gamepad Software.Update : The only stable way to currently run the Mechwarrior 4 games is to run Windows XP on a virtual machine. I have tips on how to do this at the bottom of this tutorial.Update (2/01/2019): I am working on a new tutorial for this post, I am going to update the work around to get these games working on windows 10 by using the Wine D3D DLLs.

I am also updating the section on using game controllers in mechwarrior 4 as the Pinnacle Game Profiler doesn't seem to be working in the current windows 10 and the support forum on the Pinnacle website is shut down. Last I heard the software developer for Pinnacle died and they are trying to find a replacement for him. I have an alternative to pinnacle witch is free, vJoy+UCR, this will allow customization of both the axes and button mapping. This update will be coming soon.Update (5/10/2018): For those of you who have been asking about getting Vengeance and Black Knights to work with the latest game patch, I am working on it, when I get them working I will update to tutorial to include the patch. Additionally the Clan and Inner-sphere Mech Packs no longer seem to be working on Windows 10, I am looking into a fix for this issue and I will post the fix as soon as I have it.Update (5/9/2018): I added some additional tips to the 'Troubleshooting' section of the tutorial.

Also, Game Ranger is the only stable way I have found to get Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries to work in online multiplayer. Vengeance and Black knight do not work in online multiplayer and they do not work with Game Ranger. If you want to play online, you will have to use game Ranger with Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries.Update (4/26/2018): Alternate download links have been posted in the 'Download the Mechwarrior 4 Game Files' section of the tutorial for Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries MekTek MP3.1.Update (4/26/2018): The download links for Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries MekTek MP3.1 is currently down, I am working on a new source for the game files. I will have a new set of links posted ASAP.Update (4/20/2018): I fixed the issue of the joystick function crashing the game when I start Vengeance or Black Knight. Both are working with the joy stick now.

You can delete the /gosnovideo switch from the target line in the shortcut file.Update (4/16/2018): Game Ranger will only work with Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries MekTek MP3.1 release #51.c. Vengeance and Black Knight will not work with Game Ranger.

OK, I think the reason the games are not working is because your graphics card is to advanced for the game. This is common with people who have newer Nvidia graphics cards.

I know of a fix for the Mechwarrior 4: mercenaries MekTek MP3.1. Go to the installation folder 'C:Program Files (x86)Mechwarrior Mercenaries - Mektek MekpakAssetsBinaries'. Now locate the file titled imagehlp.dll. Right click on it and select Rename. Change the file name ti this imagehlp.dll.backup. This will disable the.dll file that is causing the issue for Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries MekTek MP3.1For Vengeance and Black Knight you can try using the mechvm dosbox or dgVoodoo2 programs as instructed in HattedSandwich's tutorial and CaptainWabbit's tutorial using DXwnd. These are essentially a graphics emulator that launches the game in a wrapper.

Mechwarrior 4 vengeance windows 10

I have had success using and to get old games to work on newer windows operating systems, though it does take some time tinkering with the settings. Great to be able to play the game again. I downloaded Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries MekTek v3.1 MP3.1 Release #51.c from your link. I was of the understanding that it was complete and did not need anything else including any patches to play, I set it up as directed and it plays well except that it crashes in the mission where you destroy the Fafnir mech factory when moving to Nav Point Gama and in the Hacker Run mission right after the chopper lands. Do i need the patches? Also, after I installed the game and started the game, it immediately recognized my Logitech Exterme 3D PRO joystick which i use fo other games.

Any suggestion would be appreciated Thanks. If you need to patch you version of Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries to the Release #51.c final version, you can download the three patch files. Be sure to install the patches in numerical order, patch #1, then Patch #2, and last is Patch #3. If you are having a problem where the game crashes in certain missions when helicopters are deployed or in the mission where you destroy the Fafnir mech factory when moving to Nav Point Gama, make sure to install the patches in numerical order to fix these game crash issues. When i set up my joystick I cleared all the buttons except for button 1, the trigger button, i set that one to fire weapon group one. Then i loaded the pinnacle game profiler and made a custom button profile using that instead of the games control settings. You will find the info for that in my tutorial under the section labeled Playing With Game Controllers.

Sorry, I may may have not been clear I am playing the game using the Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries MekTek v3.1 MP3.1 Release #51.c from your link. However, this release is crashing at the mission where you destroy the Fafnir mech factory when moving to Nav Point Gama and in the Hacker Run mission right after the chopper lands. If this is the complete updated game with all of the proper patches why is it crashing.

In the hot fix readme file, it states (Note: To check to see that the hotfixes were applied properly, check your MekScript1.txt file. It should read as the following: # MP3.1 Release # 51.c) When I look at MekScript1.txt file in the Release#51.c that I downloaded and am playing why does it state (# MP3.1 Release # 51.a) I am confused and wondering why this release is having the same problems that are common to downloading the older game files which require the patchs? Also, if this release has /gosnojoystick as part of its matrix why is my joystick being recognized?

Why would that be happening?. I looked into this and found the clancoyote.com link i am using for the game is advertised as # MP3.1 Release # 51.c but you are correct that it is actually # MP3.1 Release # 51.a. I have a link for the patch files for the game so you can patch it to # MP3.1 Release # 51.c. You can download the 51.c patch files make sure you install them in numerical order starting with patch#1 then #2 then #3. Also make sure to run the patches as administrator or they wont patch properly. Also you will need to delete you game save and make new one after patching or the game will continue to crash.

I added some excerpts from the article. Visit the link for the full thing and screenshots.A kilometre from the harbour in Vancouver, on the second floor of a small shopping centre is the last bastion of the MechWarrior franchise. For six years, Piranha Games’ president Russ Bullock has kept the series alive with MechWarrior Online. But with MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, he’s ushering in the dawning of a new era of mech warfare.' There’s a huge contingent of fans that have been wanting a singleplayer MechWarrior 5 for years,' Bullock tells me as we walk through the Piranha Games office.

'Of course we wanted to make one, but being a smaller developer we had say, 'Okay first things first, we need to succeed with MechWarrior Online and that will allow us to make a singleplayer game.' And it took a while—a lot longer than we thought—but we’re doing it.' Mercenary cultureMechWarrior 5: Mercenaries isn’t just a sequel to MechWarrior 4. It’s a chance to re-establish the series and give its hordes of hardcore fans something that they’ve always wanted. 'A significant part of our design philosophy is asking, 'What have players always wanted to do in a MechWarrior game?'

' Bullock tells me.That’s why Piranha Games is starting with Mercenaries first rather than a straight numbered sequel. 'Traditionally, you’d make MechWarrior and then you’d make the Mercenaries offshoot,” he explains. 'The first one is a linear, story-heavy campaign and then Mercenaries is more like a sandbox.

But players want to live out the BattleTech lore, and the best way to do that is to own your own mercenary unit, so we’re going with Mercenaries first.' Instead of a series of linear missions, MechWarrior 5 puts you in command of a mercenary unit and gives you the freedom to either rise to mythic status or crash and burn along the way. Around 300 planets of the Inner Sphere will be open for business, letting you travel between the Great Houses while taking increasingly demanding contracts and building reputation with each faction as you also manage your lances of warriors and supporting technicians. The invisible handWhen you begin a new campaign, your mercenary company is in a sorry state. With only a weak mech at your disposal, you’ll be scraping by and taking low-level missions from the periphery states of the Great Houses to keep money coming in. Little by little your business will grow, but it will be up to you to decide how.' The free market is probably one of the biggest components of MechWarrior 5,' Bullock tells me.

Mechwarrior 4 Vengeance Patch

Mechs, pilots, technicians, weapon systems—everything you need to form a mercenary unit will have to be purchased from MechWarrior 5’s market. 'The market is totally dynamic based on what year it is.

In the year 3015, for example, they didn’t have any pulse lasers or Ferro-Fibrous armour as all of that technology comes in later. And it’s also going to depend where you are in the Inner Sphere.

If you are in one Great House’s space, you’ll see mechs common among that house. That’s going to provide a whole level of flavour to your play experience each time you start a new campaign.' Unlike MechWarrior Online, where players can customise their mech chassis in a variety of ways, MechWarrior 5 will stick to the lore and force players to choose between strictly defined roles. “It’s great for a PVP game because the level of customisation is huge,” Bullock tells me.

“But if we allowed that in MechWarrior 5, you essentially negate the free market. There’s no need to keep your eyes peeled for that Jenner JR7-F that has Ferro-Fibrous armour if you take your JR7-D and just put Ferro-Fibrous armour on it.' To that end, MechWarrior 5 will feature an unprecedented number of mechs to choose from. 'Most MechWarrior games have had maybe 12 to 15 different mech chassis,' Bullock explains.

“We’re looking at having upwards of 60 chassis with 300 to 400 variants. You could probably play the game multiple times within just one Great House’s space and see different combinations on the free market.' .With such an emphasis on freedom, MechWarrior 5 is harkening back to the first MechWarrior, before the series became entrenched in the linear stories of Great Houses and their political games. But 15 years is a long time, and MechWarrior 5 will undoubtedly be many players’ first robot rodeo. 'It’s important for us to try and be as mindful as we can about a new generation of PC gamers,' Bullock says. 'But we understand who our community is and who we’re making the game for.'

Bullock says his hope is that by digging deeper into the series roots than ever before, newcomers will begin to understand why so many care so deeply for this universe—why the names of those 300 planets of the Inner Sphere matter. “This isn’t going to be some watered-down MechAssault made partially for consoles,” Bullock says. 'It’s going to be the same kind of action simulator that people have been wanting for 15 years.'

That’s not just because Bullock thinks it’s what MechWarrior fans want, but because it’s what they deserve. 'We’re dedicated to the core MechWarrior fanbase. They’re the ones that supported us with MechWarrior Online and now we’re making a game for them.'
