Often these fakes are for popular and highly sought-after titles like Chrono Trigger and the Pokemon gen 4 titles. Here are some pointers that will hopefully help you avoid a broken heart over that bargain that seems too good to be true.Which actually brings us to the first check - the listing itself:.If it seems too good to be true, chances are, it is. An auction starting at 99p isn't cause for suspicion, but the chance to outright buy a copy of Pokemon Heart Gold or Soul Silver for £12/$16 is highly likely to be bull, unless someone is cleaning out their kid's room and just wants to be rid of everything ASAP.Sometimes you'll see a listing that states they have multiples in stock, or that they've sold a high amount.

These are obviously fakes. Think about it - would the games be so sought-after if people were able to stockpile hundreds?

Exactly.Stock photos. A picture of a cartridge on a pure white background complete with saturated colour is not what your average seller goes for, and you'll usually find the same picture across multiple listings. Look for something taken on a table or bed instead.The simplest check of all? Make sure it's not coming from China. That might sound a little racist and generalised, but the fact is that China is the birthplace of most of these fakes.

If the cartridge is for a US or EU version of the game then that tells you everything you need to know, because why would it be coming from China?Now some simple checks for the cartridge itself, in no particular order:.The golden Nintendo seal. If the cartridge is an EU/PAL cartridge, the seal will be a circle and say 'Original Nintendo Seal of Quality'. US cartridges have an oval seal, which states 'Official Nintendo Seal'. The colour should be a light gold, not a deep orange or brown.

It's hard to explain, but you'll know it when you see it.The white band at the bottom of the sticker will show a three part code, ending in 'EUR' for European cartridges, 'USA' for America, 'JPN' for Japan, you get the idea. Take a look at the font, shown in the red rectangle. That's the true usual font, although sometimes it will be in the slightly different Helvetica font, such as on some Japanese cartridges (thank you ).The serial code on the back, printed in black (may be faded for old and well-loved cartridges).

Take note of the first four letters of that code - they should be the central four letters of that three-part code on the front. See the above image for an example.The embossing on the reverse.

There should be the Nintendo logo in its signature oblong, with the small 'R' for registered trademarks, and below it should be 'NTR-005 PAT. On the left is the fake, the right is the genuine. Take note of the slim font and the shallow embossing. It shouldn't feel 'chunky', nor should the embossed arrow on the front of the cartridge (the one pointing downwards).The green board showing between the 'teeth' of the cartridge should have visible white letters between the plastic slits.

If there are no letters, or they're behind the plastic strips, then it's not a good sign. Genuine cartridges will sometimes spell 'Nintendo' or something between the teeth, it looks fake as hell but it's actually on some genuine cartridges.Test the cartridge's quality the good old fashioned way. Pick at the sticker and get your fingernails in the join between the front and back. If the seam can't hold up to you tugging at it, it hasn't been made with Nintendo's quality.Real cartridgess have a very small rectangular indent along the top seam of the cartridge (centered horizontally). If your cartridge doesn't have it, it is probably fake (tip thanks to ).The Nintendo logo on the sticker will sometimes be red on a fake when it should be black, white or a different colour.

This will be the counterfeit maker just going with Nintendo's signature colour as a bit of guesswork. Some genuine games do have it in red though, so look up images of genuine copies if you're unsure of this.If nothing else, pop it into a 3DS or a DSi. The consoles will usually sniff out a fake easily, either refusing to read it or bringing up a different game than that shown on the sticker.So there you go. Again, I'm not an expert, but we get plenty of posts regarding fake cartridges and I hope these tips will go some way to helping you collectors. You can always message a seller and politely ask them to provide pictures of a cartridge's reverse just to dispel any doubts.

If they want it gone for the handsome prices they usually fetch, it's in their interests to snap a quick picture.And if you still fall prey to a fake, don't sell it on! Get your money back and destroy it or repurpose it in some other way, but don't put it back out there. The second one looked way more legit because the problems I found with the first one were fixed in the image for the listing. Also, it wasn't shipping from China and the seller had 100% feedback (unlike the first seller who had a few people call him out about the fake games if you dig through the feedback comments). Honestly, I think the second seller didn't know the game was fake but who knows. Anyway the game was Contra 4 and now I'm determined to get a legit copy of it!.

I know the feeling. I still have the copy and it irks me. It plays well enough but knowing it's a fake kills me. Did you get a refund on them? I've been shopping for a legit one but have not pulled the trigger. Sucks that DS cartridges are so easy to fake.

Also, the cartridge I got was listed as shipping from Sacramento, Ca but when I investigated further the origin was Hong Kong. This was Ebay so even if it said it was not China they can fake it and say it was ship from somewhere else.
