I'm not sure if the other games in the series are this bad but oh dear that game was one of my biggest disappointments ever. Mainly due to the fact that the cover and the blurb and the screenshots make it look like other rpg's then the gameplay was absolutely awful, it was slow, unclear on anything and when it was new a waste of my money:(. I bought it a while ago thinking it was an RPG similar to what I had played before (it being Squaresoft and all) and thought it was bad, but not long ago at a friends house I saw he had it. I thought 'heck I'm older, I'll try and give it redemption.' It was still bad:/.
One of my most disappointing purchases I ever made at the time. So SaGa Frontier refers to only the two Playstation entries in the series. There's quite a bit more SaGa games than that: three on the Gameboy, three on the Super Famicom, two on the PS1, and two on the PS2 (one of which is a remake of a Super Famicom game.) As well as other remakes for more esoteric hardware. My personal favorite is SaGa Frontier II, but it's actually a bit of a standout from the series. It has the eccentric gameplay of the series, but it's much more focused story-wise. Plus it has beautiful hand-painted water color graphics and and amazing soundtrack. After that, I'd go with the PS2 remake of Romancing SaGa. You might consider trying the Gameboy/DS entries first, as I think they were a bit easier.Anyhow, assuming you have a flash cart you could get a copy of the Japanese DS title and English patch it.
SaGa 2 is my favorite, and it definitely has a patch.I'd follow that with SaGa Frontier 1, it maintains the extensive choice of character types that the Gameboy entries had (Human, Mutant/Esper, Robot, and Monster), but adds depth such multiple schools of magic, weapon/unarmed/gun combat skills, and more. It also has Be-A-you-ti-ful graphics. Astounding hand-drawn character art. The music is also quite good in my opinion. From there, I'd take on Minstrel Song. It's a nice progression, and it has the best graphics of these three (as a PS2 entry), and the prior playtime should adequately prep you for it's somewhat wonky difficulty curve. This one affords you alot of choices, but as a remake of the first SNES title, it doesn't have the mutant/robot angle. It's still a great game.Recap:.I'd avoid Unlimited SaGa.
It's a boardgame, basically, and a pain in the ass with few redeeming qualities. The only thing I liked was the music, and it wasn't worth the time I invested 'trying' to like the game.
I'm a huge fan of the first Saga Frontier. There's many things about the game that were never completed due to time and budget constraints. (Extra Character quests, missions, maps, items) but to me, it's a rather complete and enjoyable game.
I own the rest of the Saga series and none of them come close to the fun of the first one.Saga 1 Romancing Saga Saga 2 Unlimited SagaThough I have to agree, Unlimited Saga has great artwork, the monopoly board system caused me to dislike it greatly. I'm just making your problem worse. But also consider Romancing Saga 3 for the SNES. Unless you can read Japanese, you'll have to find a patched ROM that's been translated to English, but it's not hard to find. I've only played it a little but it seems promising. If you enjoyed the other Square SNES games then you'll probably enjoy it too.I loved Saga Frontier 2. I played through it several times.
I never got very far in SF 1. It seems to let you accidentally go down dead end roads because it lets you explore the world pretty freely. But the graphics and music are really catchy and it seems like it could be fun if you stuck with it. I own every Saga game.yet have beaten none of them.
I would love to delve further into them but everytime I get a chance another, less grueling, game comes my way. Unlimited is very unique and I like it. But it is like playing DnD alone. SaGa Frontier II reminds me a lot of legend of Mana. The first SaGa frontier game is more like Square's Live a Live as there is many different stories that don't seem to be in the same timeline or world that all converge into one near the end. I personally thought that Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song was the best (as far as I have played) because it seems to have a solid story, and has that strange ascetic that FF9 had IMO.
Where the characters were Chibi but the world felt real.
